Area prices up 0.8 percent over the two months and 2.9 percent over the year.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for Miami was up 0.8 percent over the November-December pricing period, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Janet S. Rankin noted that the all items less food and energy index rose 1.1 percent. Over the two-month pricing period, the food index decreased 0.5 percent, while the energy index was unchanged. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

Over the last 12 months, the CPI-U rose 2.9 percent. The index for all items less food and energy advanced 3.7 percent over the year reflecting price increases for shelter and medical care.

Food

The food index declined 0.5 percent during the November-December pricing period as food at home prices decreased 1.1 percent. Prices for food away from home edged up 0.2 percent over the two months.

Since December 2015—the food index edged down 0.3 percent—led by a 2.2-percent decrease in the food at home index. The food away from home index advanced 2.3 percent over the year.

Energy

The energy index was unchanged over the November-December pricing period. Prices for motor fuel edged down 0.3-percent, while prices for electricity and utility (piped) gas service rose 0.2 and 3.1 percent, respectively.

Over the year, the energy index rose 0.4 percent, led by a 7.4-percent increase in motor fuel prices. Since December 2015, prices declined 6.5 percent for electricity and 2.8 percent for utility (piped) gas service.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy rose 1.1 percent during the November-December pricing period. Over the two months, price increases for medical care (8.7 percent) and shelter (1.3 percent), were partially offset by a seasonal price decline for apparel (-4.2 percent).

From December 2015 to December 2016, the index for all items less food and energy advanced 3.7 percent, led by increases for shelter (4.5 percent) and medical care (9.2 percent).
