Taking Forklift Safety Seriously
Although the safety guidelines for operating a forklift may seem lengthy and tedious, especially for those whom already are experienced in the warehousing industry, the truth is that they exist for very good reasons. When the rules are followed and forklifts are operated properly, they make jobs flow efficiently and effectively. But as workers become more comfortable with machinery, they may become less vigilant about basics forklift safety guidelines, making dangerous and sometimes even deadly errors. Here are some lessons that can be learned.
Space Safety
Not paying attention to the space around you can have a detrimental effect on a forklift operator’s job. Always watching that you have ample space from floor to ceiling and wall-to-wall helps keep your products and people safe.
Speed Caution
SLOW DOWN! Forklifts for the most part steer from the rear. This means that the back of the forklift swings on a wide turn. Slowing down when turning or stopping will help prevent the vehicle from rolling over. Sometimes vehicles can come off balance when you take sudden, quick turns.
Know the Limits
If you want to end up with a disaster, try top loading a smaller forklift that isn’t equipped for heavy weight jobs! Always being aware of the vehicles’ limitations will save everyone expenses in materials or even a trip to the hospital.
Forklifts Are Fearless
A Forklift can only count on the driver to keep it within safe zones. A driver may be afraid to go over the edge, but the forklift does not share this fear. Always being cautious when loading and unloading as well as analyzing and re analyzing your environment are a must when it comes to making sure you and your machine leave the job site safe and happy.
Know the Load
Many people may assume that products are always packed perfectly, but that is just not true. Many experienced operators can usually size up a potential load, but if something looks “off” , it is a good idea to report it rather then pay the price later.
